STOP MOVING THROUGH PAIN

STOP MOVING THROUGH PAIN

Are you constantly training in pain – just hoping it will go away?

6 years ago I was so driven towards a training goal that I didn’t  rest when I started to feel discomfort in my hip.  My addiction to training got in the way of common sense.  I ignored  the warning signs, carried on training, and before I knew it a short term injury became a chronic long term one.  I had also started to move differently to protect the injured joint – and was shifting the trauma to another part of my body – causing further damage.  I was unable to ride properly for years. I compromised my long term health and performance by not taking a couple of months out to fix the problem.

Don’t make the same mistake I did! If you are in pain this is what you should do:

REST AND REHAB

If you act early injuries can often be avoided.

Understand what the ROOT CAUSE of the pain is – it is usually a result of poor movement patterns and weakness, and the symptom is 9 times out of 10 not the root cause of the problem.

This is why stretching or foam rolling might help relieve pain but the problem keeps coming back.  It is a temporary fix, not a permanent solution.

If you want to eliminate pain for good, Invest in a coach to assess your movement patterns, and to write an individualised program for you to get you moving better and strengthening your weaknesses.

CHANGE YOUR MINDSET

Injuries are frustrating and it is hard to stay positive when it doesn’t feel like you are getting better.

Try reframing it and see it as an opportunity to learn about your body,  an opportunity to learn to move better so that when you come back not only are you pain free, but stronger than before.

Addressing pain requires discipline, patience and hard work but the relief and happiness you will feel at being able to move and train pain free long term make it all worthwhile.
